Milford Haven Area Business Network
Milford was a new town. It came into existence by an Act of Parliament obtained by Sir William Hamilton in 1790. He entrusted the task of developing it to his nephew Charles Francis Greville, who, in turn, invited a group of American Quakers to return from the New World to settle there and carry on South Sea whaling. A notable event in the early history of the town was the visit of Sir William and Lady Hamilton, accompanied by Lord Nelson, in August 1802 to examine the progress that had been made.
A new impetus was given when Robert Fulke Greville, nephew of the founder returned to his estate after many years abroad. He carried through the Milford Improvement Act (1857), which gave the town some measures of self-government. Plans to build docks had been posted as early as 1814, but nothing effective was done until 1874. The Milford Docks Company was formed and the Docks were finally completed in 1888 with the Docks Company exerting great energy to attract trans-Atlantic traffic. Fishing drifters and smacks began to use the Docks and step-by-step Milford became a fishing port ranking fourth in England and Wales.
Milford Haven is in a process of rejuvenation with new developments of shopping, office facilities and industrial units, plus the modernisation of the Torch Theatre.
The docks remain a key part of the towns economy, with a vibrant marine leisure industry plus the benefits that have come from the Waterway and LNG make it an ideal location to run your business from.
